RESTORATION OF KARAMTOLI TALAB

Karamtoli Talab is at the intersection of two major roads of Ranchi, bariatu and karamtoli road. We were asked to revive and restore the talab area by the urban development department, with minimal use of concrete or any material which could stop the recharge of groundwater. We also sought to re-imagine the talab as a piece of social infrastructure - (A) Pedestrian Walkways - Outside: The Talab campus is surrounded by a pavement which allows the nearby citizens to access it by foot. This is a part of a larger goal of making Ranchi a walk-able city and reducing our need to commute by private vehicles. Low railings allow visual access to the talab from outside the campus. Inside: The talab is surrounded by a jogging track, which can be used for morning/evening walks, with a picturesque view of the water body and surrounding greenery. (B) Public Facilities: A small cafeteria, prasad room and public toilets are housed in a small structure adjacent to the talab. Artwork by local artist adorns its walls, which shows the locals celebrating karma puja. Park benches and a small tensile structure provides a shaded seating area, allowing shelter from natural climatic elements like sudden rain or harsh sunlight. Small lights abutting the pavement act as a guiding path during the night time. (C) Celebration of local festivals - Ghats have been laid out in intervals, which allows the devotees to perform Chhath puja. These ghats also serve as open air seating pavilions. The Sarna St
